The secondary storage devices can be evaluated on the basis of the capacity, data transfer speed and the scalability. The companies that require faster data transfer speed or rapid “time to time data” use the arrays or the tape libraries for fulfilling the demands of data storage. The most compelling feature of the DLT backup data tape drive is that it is fully read & write compatible with the previous models of the DLT tape.

So, the investment of the company is secured and protected. The DLT tape moves across the reading and writing head and then afterwards to the take up reel. When the tape is loaded, the tension of the tape is adjusted across the tape head by the DLT tape drive. In this way the tape contact is light which lowers the wear on the media and tape head as well.

The data recording in the DLT tape is “linear”, parallel to tape media’s edges in tracks that are longitudinal. So the linear data recording helps the DLT tape drive simultaneous reading of multiple “data channels” through patented reading & writing head. Because of combination of minimized tape tension and tape path, the tape media and tape head wear & tear is reduced.

The head of the DLT format is improved and enhanced. Therefore, the wear due to the tension across the head surface that uses the self-regulating “outriggers” & the “contours” is further reduced. All the parts of head of DLT tape drive ensure the smooth contact with the 5 island of reading & writing head. The structure of the DLT tape head consists of 2 writing heads, 1 reading head and 2 outriggers. The tape head is designed in such a way that it strips the air film away from the surface of the tape to make sure the smooth contact between tape heads and the tape reel.

The tape media and head remain safe form wear after the tape stops because the heads of the DLT tape drive are non rotating. The head life of the DLT 7000 tape drive is about thirty thousand hours because it has the “tape tensioning algorithm”. This algorithm helps to reduce the tension and also optimizes the signal strength between the tape and head. The data information is the most important and vital asset of the company. So, to preserve this valuable information, the companies need highly reliable and durable storage media. The DLT technology is the best choice to give the maximum performance.

The DLT tape drive has the non rotating heads so the tape media and the head are safe from wear incase the tape stops. The media life of the DLT 7000 backup tape drive is about five hundred thousand passes with head life of thirty thousand hours. DLT 7000 tape drive has a 4 channel system for the purpose of reading and writing the data. The DLT drive can simultaneously write or read these 4 channels of data. So, as a result the native data transfer speed of 5MB/sec can be achieved.

If the number of channels is increased, then the data transfer speed will also increase. MIG heads are used in the DLT tape drives. MIG are the “ferrite metal in gap”. The output of the MIG is more than of the previous heads of DLT drives. The new SPR (Symmetric Phase Recording) tape head also has been included in product line of DLT 7000.
