Sony has offered its customers the best and reliable tape formats of DDSDigital Data Storage & DAT Digital Audio Tape along with their full range products. The first generation DDS-1 was introduced in the year 1990, from that year until now Sony has extended the product line of DDS DAT tape format. Until now, six generations of DDS DAT have been introduced in the market.

The new technology from Sony makes it possible for DDS and DAT tape cartridges to store more volume of data onto a single cartridge. The tape reel of Sony DAT72 tape has very thin and fine coating. This coating technology helps the DAT 72 cartridge to store up to 72 GB of data. The size of the Sony DAT72 may be small but its storage capacity is very large. The “helical scan” and the “dual layer coating” are the technologies that enhance the recording density of the Sony DAT-72 tape cartridge. Each data cartridge of DAT-72 can hold up to 36 GB (native) and 72 GB (compressed) data. The DAT-72 tape cartridge of Sony has proved its performance and has passed through the qualification test of HP. Therefore, the Sony DAT 72 is certified by the HP.

The tape cartridge has a “dual layer coating”. This coating consists of a very thin and fine magnetic and non-magnetic layer. The benefit of this thin magnetic layer is that it increases the output. In the recording of high density it is necessary that the frequency range should also be high, as a result noise is produced and the thin magnetic layer helps to reduce this noise.

The smooth surface of the DAT72 tape cartridge is due to the non-magnetic layer. The durability and the stability of the tape travel is ensured by the smooth tape surface. The magnetic layer of the Sony DAT 72 is considered as the thinnest of all other tapes in this category. When the Sony DAT-72 tape was tested under severe working conditions, the error rate was very low which assures that the tape cartridge is very robust and reliable.

The cleaning cartridge DGD15CL from Sony has the attributes to effectively clean the tape cartridge and reducing the potential for wear of tape head. This cleaning cartridge can be used in the DAT 72 drives and also in the DDS drives belonging to the previous generations.

Like the DAT72, Sony DAT-160 also has the “thin coating” technology that helps DAT-160 cartridge to hold native data of 80GB and compressed data of 160GB.
Advancements have been made in the tape cartridge design and the coating technology of the Sony DAT-160. The linear recording density of the DAT160 is also increased. The backward compatibility, robustness, efficient performance and reliability of the Sony DAT160 tape and other DDS & DAT tape formats has made them leaders of low end backup tape media market. DDS and DAT are the best backup tape media formats that provide reliable storage solutions in long term and future as well.

The features of Sony DAT-160 increases stability and durability. It has the capacity and ability to give high output and efficient performance even after repeated operations of reading and writing. The level of noise is also low even if the frequency band is high. The DAT160 is also backward compatible with the DDS-4 and DAT-72.
